Latin manuscripts at Houghton Library, circa 800-1940.
Holdings include Latin manuscripts dating chiefly from the 12th to 15th century, with fragments and single leaves from the 9th century. Material of special note includes Catholic Church psalters, breviaries, missals, church records, sermons, and calendars. Also manuscripts of the Bible and commentaries, books of hours with illuminated miniatures, manuscripts of writings and theological treatises of saints, popes, and religious figures, and papal briefs and bulls. Other items include 12th century anthology of secular Latin poems, Life of Anselm from an English monastery, 14th century Aristotle manuscript, letters and lecture notes of scholars, plays, poems, histories, essays, and 18th century lectures and treatises on physics, astronomy, and philosophy illustrated with pen and ink drawings and engravings. Documents include land charters, deeds, English manor rolls (1491-1871), transcripts of court rolls, revenue scrolls, diplomas, and paleographic leaves. There are also Harvard students' dissertations and commentaries on individual Latin manuscripts in the Houghton collections.
