Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is a federally funded research laboratory founded in 1947. Operated by Associated Universities, Inc., sponsored by nine northeastern universities under a contract with the U. S. Dept. of Energy, BNL conducts research in high energy physics, basic energy sciences, nuclear energy, nuclear and medium energy physics and chemistry, and basic life sciences, including biology and medical use and effects of radiation, radioisotopes, and other nuclear tools.
