City University of New York. City College. Dept. of Physics.
Department of Physics records, 1898-1998, (bulk 1960-1985).
Includes minutes and reports as well as information on curriculum, budget, facilities and grants, including the multi-year grant awarded in 1968 by the National Science Foundation for departmental development. Also extensive personnel files dating from 1898 and material on the department's involvement in the Doctoral Program in Physics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. This period also includes the arrival of "big" science at City, and particularly physics, under the leadership of physicist Robert E. Marshak during 1970-1979.
Physics was part of the curriculum of the Free Academy of New York (later City College) from its beginning in 1849. A laboratory was erected next to the main building on East 23rd Street in 1883. Professor Robert O. Doremus was well known for his experiments in electricity. Alfred G. Compton was appointed professor of Physics in 1901. The curriculum expanded to include mechanics, heat, light, sound, magnetism, and electricity. In 1968 the dept. received a large multi-year grant from the National Science Foundation for development. Outstanding faculty were recruited and facilities improved. Robert E. Marshak served as president of the college from 1970-1979.
