Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Office of the Director.
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Office of the Director, Henry Bryant Bigelow records, circa 1930-1939.
The administrative series primarily contains correspondence, twelve folders of which are from job applicants, some containing resumes, and copies of responses from Bigelow, [Box 1, f5-f11][Box 4, f10-f14], annual reports, funding and financial information, staff and trustees meeting reports, and reprint orders. The individuals series contains correspondence between Bigelow and people significant to the merging institution, primarily scientists. The significant quantity of correspondence between Bigelow and the Treasurer of the Institution, Lawrason Riggs, is of a financial nature. [Box 2, f5-f16][Box 6, f30]. There is noteworthy correspondence from Columbus Iselin regarding early cruises of the Atlantis [Box 1, f44 and f45] and from A. E. Parr on the Bingham Oceanographic Foundation's joint cruise [Box 2, f1]. Correspondence with Alfred Redfield gives details on the scientist's decision to come to the Institution [Box 2, f2]. General correspondence to and from other individuals is organized into alpha files. There are some photographs and newspaper clippings contained in this series. The director and the private, scientific, and government organizations he dealt with most frequently in establishing and gaining support for the institution. Note that a file in the administrative series entitled "Cooperation with the Bureau Hydrographique International, seal experiments, 1931-1935", might be more appropriate in the institution series [Box 1, f2]. The miscellaneous series appear to have been a catch-all for topics that did not fit into the other areas of the filing arrangement. Correspondence, project lists, programs, suggestions, reports, telegrams, equipment orders are all included in this series. The ship series contains correspondence, ship designs, cruise charts, telegrams, newspaper clippings, brochures, photographs. There is correspondence with Owen and Minot regarding the design, costs, outfitting and maintenance of Atlantis during her first year of service, as well as correspondence from acting Master Clowser about the Equatorial Cruise of 1932 [Box 4, f1-f3]. Note that a file called "WHOI correspondence: Bigelow/Minot/Atlantis construction, 1930-1933" which is filed in the administrative series, may be more closely related to the ship series [Box 1, f1]. The content of all of the correspondence in Bigelow's Directors Files deals mainly with the administrative business of establishing the institution. It also documents Bigelow's dealing with scientists and other institutions in the development of collaborative scientific ties and does not reflect on Bigelow's personal research work as a scientist.
Henry Bryant Bigelow (1879-1967) became the first Director of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1930 and held that position until 1939. In 1927, while Bigelow was Associate Professor of Zoology at Harvard University and Curator of Oceanography at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, he was asked to prepare a report for the Committee on Oceanography of the National Academy of Science. The report was published in 1937 under his name as a book entitled "Oceanography: Its Scope, Problems and Economic Importance". It not only led to the establishment of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, incorporated on January 6, 1930, with a grant from the Rockefeller Institut of $2 million plus $50,000 per year for ten years, but to "additional financial benefits to oceanography and marine biology through gifts to the Scripps Institution, the University of Washington and the Bermude Biological Station." Bigelow's directorship coincided with his association with Harvard University and he was only in residence in Woods Hole during the summer, (allowing him to have an unbroken record of service to Harvard of 55 years). During Bigelow's term as director, the Institute grew in size and scope. Upon retiring as director in 1939, he was elected a member and President of the Board of Trustees. A chair in oceanography was founded in his name by WHOI in 1958. In 1960, recognizing his great service to the institution, he was named Founder Chairman of the Board, and he was also the first recipient of the Henry Bryant Bigelow Metal, an award established that year in his honor.
