Physicist, born Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Educated U. Leiden (Ehrenfest), M.A. 1916. Niels Bohr's first scientific assistant. U. Copenhagen, 1919-1926. U. Utrecht, 1926-1934. U. Leiden, 1934-1952. Research and numerous publications on quantum physics including intensity of atomic spectra, normalizing problems of charging and of mass; work on dispersion of light, among Kramers' most important contribution (1924); predicted in paper with Heisenberg the same year, Raman effect. Died Oegstgeest, Holland 1952.
