Antoine Lavoisier manuscript collection, 1770-1794.
Letters, notes, legal documents, maps, and plates dating mostly from 1770-1794, relating to Lavoisier's involvement in Old Regime taxation in France's Ferme Gňřale, his scientific work, the Acadm̌ie des Sciences (of which he was a member), and the Rǧie des Poudres et Salpt̊res (which he administered). Also included are notes and correspondence by Marie-Anne-Pierrette Lavoisier, his wife, who translated English scientific works into French and created the plates for his Trait ̌Elm̌entaire de Chemie. Letters include correspondence with the Acadm̌ie des Sciences, Jean Sylvain Bailly, Franȯis Baudon, Anne-Margueritte-Charlotte Baudon, Antoine Baum,̌ Claude-Louis Berthollet, Jean-Antoine-Claude Chaptal, Joseph Black, Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau, Auguste Denis Fougeroux de Bondaroy, Antoine-Franȯis de Fourcroy, Benjamin Franklin (photocopy of one letter), Jean-Antoine Lavoisier, Joseph Louis Lagrange, Marie-Anne-Pierrette Lavoisier, Gaspard Monge, Jacques Paulze, and the Rǧie des Poudres et Salpt̊res. Other documents relate to Benoist LaForte, the Ferme Gňřale, the Acadm̌ie des Sciences, Mathurin-Jacques Brisson, Joseph Priestley, the Rǧie des Poudres et Salpt̊res, and other aspects of Lavoisier's life and work.
Includes 64 notebooks of notes taken by Henry Guerlac, Carl Perrin, and Rhoda Rappaport concerning manuscript sources in France for the study of Lavoisier; 138 leaves of photocopies of manuscripts in France's Archives nationales; ca. 85 drawings, proofs, and final plates for Lavoisier's Traite Elm̌entaire de Chemie; and a catalogue of the books in the personal library of Lavoisier and his wife, Marie-Anne-Pierrette Lavoisier.
French chemist and physicist, regarded as the founder of modern chemistry; also an important French government official, active in the Rǧie des poudres and Ferme gňřale, who also served as treasurer of the Acadm̌ie des sciences.
