Sutherland Simpson lecture notes, 1891-1924 (bulk 1896-1899)
Collection consists mainly of Simpson's manuscript notes from lectures he attended at Edinburgh University on physiology and histology, the practice of medicine, midwifery, and medical ethics; other topics include materia medica, anatomy, and physiological chemistry. Lecturers include William Rutherford, Joseph M'Gregor Robertson, Sir Thomas Richard Fraser, Sir Henry Duncan Littlejohn, Sir Thomas Smith Simpson, William Smith Greenfield, Sir Thomas Grainger Stewart, Dr. John Wyllie of Edinburgh City Hospital, Sir Harold Jalland Stiles, John Chiene, Peter Guthrie Tait, Sir William Turner, and David Berry Hart. Also included are Simpson's notes for his own lectures, including two published in book form: Notes of lectures on elementary human physiology (Ithaca, NY, 1924), and Notes of lectures on human physiology (Geneva, NY, 1916).
Scottish-born American physiologist. Educated at Heriot-Watt College in Edinburgh and Edinburgh University; head of the Department of Physiology at Cornell Medical College, 1908-1926. Considered an authority on the thyroid and parathyroid glands; also published papers on the central nervous system, animal heat and body temperature, and secretory glands.
