American Institute of Physics. Center for History of Physics. Nuclear Physics Project
Nuclear Physics Project records, 1965-1971.
Records include transcripts; notes; agendas; research files; correspondence. The bulk of these records are related to the joint AIP-AAAS conferences (1967 and 1969), and to data gathered in researching the history and development of the field of nuclear physics during the 1930s. Conference materials include various transcripts of the proceedings (edited and unedited), planning material, notes, agendas and photographs. Research files and data include information on physics Ph.D.s, physics-related articles and letters in the Physical Review, funding sources for physics research (especially the National Research Council), refugee scientists in the United States, national accelerator laboratories, and sociological aspects of the development of the field. Most of the research material was compiled by Beverly Porter and Henry Small, research associates for the Project. A copy of Small's paper, Nuclear Physics in the Physical Review, is also included. Miscellaneous material includes a few letters, and a draft bibliography and draft chronology of nuclear physics.
The Nuclear Physics Project, undertaken in collaboration with the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS), studied the scientific and social development of the history of nuclear physics from its emergence as a major research field in the early 1930s through the subsequent development of subnuclear particle physics as a major field in the post-war years. During the course of the project two conferences were held, sponsored by the joint AIP-AAAS Committee on the History of Contemporary Physics. Discussions from the 1969 conference were published in 1972 as AIP conference proceedings: Exploring the History of Nuclear Physics (edited by Charles Weiner with Elspeth Hart). The project also conducted oral history interviews and identified source materials pertaining to the history of nuclear physics.
