American Institute of Physics. Center for History of Physics. Moments of Discovery Project.
AIP CHP Moments of Discovery Project records, 1974-1984.
Tape recordings; drafts and final versions of scripts and pedagogical materials; teachers' evaluations; photographs.
The project explored the usefulness of historical materials for fostering public understanding of physics. The project director was Charles Weiner followed by Joan N. Warnow; historian Lillian Hoddeson played a major role. Four audio-visual units were developed; some eighty teachers and their students used and critiqued the packages in classes ranging from high schools through graduate schools. Two of the units, The Discovery of Nuclear Fission and An Optical Pulsar Discovery, were further developed and published in a package entitled Moments of Discovery. A high school physics teacher, Arthur Eisenkraft, was employed to expand and strengthen the pedagogical materials. The package included slides, tape recordings of physicists and narrators, illustrated scripts, and teachers' guides.
