Records of Associated Universities, Inc. and of Brookhaven National Laboratory, its officers, departments and projects. Records of AUI include reports, subject files, minutes of the Board of Trustees, and correspondence of AUI officers including Eldon Shoup, J.D. Jameson, Malcolm R. Warnock, R.D. Conrad and K.D. Hartzell. There is also material on the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Greenbank, West Virginia which is also run by AUI.
Records of Brookhaven National Laboratory include correspondence, memos, reports, financial records, policy manuals, experimental logbooks, scientific papers, photographs, maps, architectural plans and other records of the BNL Board of Trustees, Director's Office, Associate, Assistant and Deputy Directors, and various research departments and projects, including the Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Accelerator Departments. There are extensive files of the papers of Director Leland John Haworth; correspondence and other papers of Directors Philip McCord Morse, Maurice Goldhaber and George Hoagland Vineyard; and papers of officers and researchers including Gerard F. Tape, Donald J. Hughes, George Kenneth Green and E.D. Courant. Correspondents include the Atomic Energy Commision, the Energy Research and Development Administration, the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, other national laboratories in the United States, the European laboratory CERN, research institutions throughout the world, and many private industrial corporations.
The papers deal with all aspects of lab administration and operation, including the design and construction of accelerators, reactors and othe equipment at the lab, and experiments carried out on the equipment in high-energy physics and other fields; patents for discoveries and inventions made at the lab; labor relations and personnel policies; accident investigations and reports; publication of laboratory research and classification/declassification of documents; public education and visits to the lab; cooperation with private industry; and relations with universities and researchers.
Brookhaven National Laboratory was founded in 1947 by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI), a non-profit corporation consisting of representatives from nine universities (Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, M.I.T., Pennsylvania, Princeton, Rochester and Yale). The Laboratory is operated by AUI under a contract with the United States Department of Energy.
