Gemant, Andrew, 1895-
Andrew Gemant papers, 1845-1983.
This collection primarily contains manuscripts and reprints of Andrew Gemants novels, poems, and short stories. Also included are essays, drawings and sketches, diaries, family photographs, and miniature literature of classics dating from the nineteenth century. His career as a physicist at Siemens-Schuckert Cable Company, the Technical University of Berlin (Technische Universitt̃ Berlin), the Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) for Research on Oscillations, Oxford University, the University of Wisconsin, and the Detroit Edison Company and as a biochemist at Grace Hospital and Wayne State University are documented through reprints of journal articles, correspondence, research notes, and photographs. Topics found in this collection include: high voltage physics; dielectrics; colloids; acoustics; viscosity and internal friction of solids; electrets; electrochemistry of oils; high voltage cables; oxidative and photochemical ions in hydrocarbons; ion-exchange resins in hydrocarbons; solubilization of cholesterol; carcinogenesis; enzymic oxidative degradation of protein in senescence; and the reduction by chemical means of the reactivity of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) toward hydrogen peroxide in order to mitigate symptoms of aging.
Andrew Gemant was born in Nagyvarad, Hungary on July 27, 1895. He received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Berlin in 1922. From 1925-1931 he was a research physicist at Siemens-Schuckert Cable Company. He held a privat-docent position at the Technical University of Berlin (Technische Universitt̃ Berlin) from 1929-1933, and from 1932-1933 he was a researcher at the Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) for Research on Oscillations. From 1934-1937 he was a research associate in the Engineering Laboratory of Oxford University, and from 1938-1939 he was a research associate in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Wisconsin. From 1940-1960 he was a staff physicist at the Detroit Edison Company. Gemant subsequently held positions as a research associate at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan from 1961-1971 and in Wayne State Universitys Department of Biochemistry from 1972-1983. He died in February 1983 at the age of 87.
