Contains Director's office files with correspondence minutes of the Cambridge Accelerator Project and project proposals, reports, blueprints and other records documenting the establishment of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator, including planning, contract negotiations and building construction. Correspondents include Arthur D. Little, Inc., U.S. Atomic Enegy Commission and M.I.T. Also director's records concerning experiments such as Synchroton Radiation, radiation safety, apparatus, and other technical matters. The records of various committees, such as the Cambridge Electron Program Advisory Committee and High Energy Physics Advisory Panel, of the Visiting Board and of staff meetings include minutes, agendas and correspondence. Other material includes personal correspondence of Director M. Stanley Livingston; personnel records; log books; drawings of apparatus; reports, correspondence and photographs regarding investigation of an accident in 1965; and correspondence, memos and other records of the Sixth International Conference on High Energy Accelerators, 1967.
The Cambridge Electron Accelerator was operated jointly with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and existed as a research facility from 1962 to ca. 1974. Research in the physics of high energy interactions of electrons and photons was carried out by teams composed of staff members and graduate students which originated from the sponsoring institutions and from other research centers.
