American Physical Society. Office of International Affairs
APS Office of International Affairs records of the International Science Foundation, 1992-1994.
Proposals (circa 6000) and associated materials submitted to the International Science Foundation's (ISF) Long-Term Research Grant program. The ISF was established in 1992 by George Soros in response to the crisis in basic science in the former Soviet Union. ISF support programs included competetive research grants, conference and travel support, and library/journal assistance. The American Physical Society (APS) in collaboration with other U.S. scientific societies played a large role in assisting the foundation in implementing its program. The largest task was administrative support for the ISF's Long-Term Research Grant Program. In 10 months the APS International Affairs Office processed 6,000 proposals and coordinated nine review panels.
The International Affairs Office of the American Physical Society was established in 1992. The functions of the Office are the support of international outreach committees and forums, joint activities with domestic and foreign organizations, the administration of outreach programs, and associations with reciprocal Member Societies.
