Nathaniel Bowditch papers, 1797-1841.
His notebooks deal with mathematical and algebra problems and the calculation of eclipses. He discusses eclipses and theory of the Mecanique Celesteof LaPlace. The main subjects: albegra, mathematics, solar eclipses, navigation. Among his correspondents: Joseph Jerome Lalande, Caleb Strong, Silvestre Francois Lacroix, Charles Babbage and other American and French scientists.
Navigator, astronomer and mathematician. Bowditch was born in Salem, Mass. Self-educated.
