The United States Atomic Energy Commission was established in 1946 to put atomic energy research and development under civilian control. It took over most of the personnel from the Manhattan Engineer District when it was dissolved in 1949. The commission was abolished in 1974 and its functions transferred to the Energy Research and Development Administration, the Federal Energy Administration, and the Federal Power Commission.
