Collection documents the long career of Bernard A. Behrend as an electrical engineer, inventor, scholar, hobbyist, and author, including materials relating to his book, The Induction Motor. There are specifications, diagrams, cost summaries, test sheets, notes, correspondence, and reports relating to different types of generators and motors that he produced for companies such as Allis Chalmers-Bullock, Hammermill Paper Company, Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power and Manufacturing Company. Correspondence pertaining to aspects of engineering and work-related matters such as meetings, expenses , etc. relating to the Bullock Electric Company, Westinghouse, and Allis-Chalmers. The collection contains numerous handwritten notes and diagrams concerning mechanical and electrical engineering which were used by Behrend in his laboratory work. There is also a bound volume of Behrend's United States patents and inventions and an autobiographical essay, "Reminiscences." There is correspondence between Margaret Chase Behrend and the author Julia Peterkin and with Clemson College officials. The collection reflects the world of science and electrical engineering from the late 19th to the early 20th century and includes blueprints, conference papers, correspondence, notes, magazine and newspaper articles, manuscript drafts, memorabilia and photographs. The collection contains correspondence related to Oliver Heaviside, Goldwin Smith, Andrew Dickson White, and Henrietta Anne Huxley. Also included is a group of photographs of electric motors, generators, and related electrical equipment, as well as individuals.
