Harvard College Observatory computations, 1841-1923.
The Harvard College Observatory was founded in 1839. In 1973, the Harvard College Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (founded in 1890) merged to form the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The Center is a research institute that carries on studies in astronomy, astrophysics, earth and space sciences, and science education. The computation records, including logbooks, notebooks, and manuscripts, principally document the analysis of stars in Cambridge and Arequipa, Peru by the Harvard College Observatory from 1841 to 1923, under the directorships of William Cranch Bond and his son, George Phillips Bond, Joseph Winlock, Edward C. Pickering, and Harlow Shapley.
The Astronomical Observatory was established in 1839, and is now known as the Harvard College Observatory. The Boyden Station of the Observatory was originally located in Arequipa, Peru until 1927 when it was transferred near Bloemfontien in the Orange Free State, South Africa. This station closed about 1966.
