The E.C. George Sudarshan Papers, 1953-2005, are comprised of research papers, academic articles, course materials, and correspondence, which encompass E.C. George Sudarshan's career as a theoretical physicist. Sudarshan sometimes incorporated science fiction into his course work, and that is represented in the collection with a number of articles regarding the relationship between the sci-fi genre and scientific theory. Many of the other articles held in this collection were written or co-written by Sudarshan, and other articles include topics as far ranging as culture and spirituality. Also included are course materials and program reports.
Ennackal Chandy George Sudarshan was a theoretical physicist who is best known for his contributions towards the quantum theory for tachyons, the V-A theory of the weak force, and the Glauber-Sudarshan P representation. Born in Kottayam, Kerala, India, on September 16, 1931, Sudarshan studied in both his home country and in the United States. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1958, and taught there, as well as at Syracuse University before he came to the University of Texas at Austin in 1969. While he would stay at UT until his passing, he also continued some of his research work in India at the Center for Theoretical Studies at the Indian Institute of Sciences, as well as the Mathematical Sciences in Chennai. Sudarshan received several awards, including the Sir C.V. Raman Award, the Bose Medal, and the Third World Academy of Science Award in Physics, among others. He also held honorary degrees from universities in Wisconsin, Chalmers at Gotheburg, Burdwan, Cochin, Kerala, Delhi, and Madaras. Sudarshan died at age 86 on May 13, 2018.
