Catherine Cesarsky is a French astrophysicist and served as Director General of the European Southern Observatory from 1999 to 2007. She has also worked extensively at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and was President of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) from 2006-2009. Cesarsky completed her graduate studies in astronomy at Harvard University.
