Family from Suzhow; fled from Japanese army at age 15; to Chekiang University, 1943-1944; transfer to Lianda University, Professor Wu Ta-you; good teachers, but no experimental facilities; Professors Ma Shijun, Yeh Qisun, Zhao Zhonggyao; M.A. highest degree in China; Lee better prepared than fellow graduate students at University of Chicago; no significant research at Lianda; completes 3 years in 13 months at Lianda; massacre of students during strikes, December 1945; leaves for U.S., September 1946. Lee and Chen-ning (Frank) Yang as part of Chinese science. Also prominently mentioned are: Xinan Lianda University, and Zhejiang University.
