National Center for Atmospheric Research (U.S.)
National Center for Atmospheric Research / University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (NCAR/UCAR) equity collection, 1970-2021.
The NCAR/UCAR Equity (NUE) Collection documents the evolution of issues facing women, people of color, and their families in the workplace and, specifically, in the workplace of NCAR/UCAR. Starting in the 1970s, committees were formed to support the participants in the organization as they worked to encourage UCAR to develop a new policy and NCAR to implement procedures for that policy on family/child care, flexible work alternatives, scientific appointments and leaves of absence. The committees were C4NW: Committee For NCAR Women, WIAS: Women In Atmospheric Sciences, CFW: Council on Family and Work, and Women & Minorities Committee. The collection also includes restricted records from the AMS Women in Meteorology survey. Additional records from the UCAR Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion were added beginning in 2017.
The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) was created in 1960 to provide a facility for the collection and analysis of data from the atmosphere. The center was established by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research with initial funding from the National Science Foundation.
