GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment
Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP) Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) records, 1972-1979.
These materials focus primarily on the National Center for Atmospheric Research's (NCAR) role in the GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE), specifically aircraft flights and data management, but also include information about other aspects of the project. Materials include flight logs and debriefing forms, satellite imagery, correspondence, newsletters, workshop proceedings, mission reports, and photographs. Record creators include Roy Jenne, William Kellogg, Joachim Kuettner, Margaret LeMone, Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology (MMM), A. H. Miller, Katsuyuki Ooyama, Herbert Riehl, Walter Orr Roberts, Stanley Ruttenberg, Philip Duncan Thompson, Henry Van de Boogaard, and Edward Zipser.
The GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) was a large and complex international scientific experiment designed to gain an increased understanding of the atmosphere and causes of climatic variation and change. GATE sought to learn how cloud clusters in the tropic transformed and redistributed energy within the atmosphere, knowledge that was needed for the development of numerical models for long-range weather prediction and for assessing the long-term effects of pollutants on the atmosphere.
