The collection includes correspondence, memos, reports, clippings, photographs, and audio and video cassettes pertaining to the administrative functions of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.
The Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was formed in 1983 through the merger of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the Department of Meteorology. The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences was established in 1969. From 1952 to 1969, it existed as the Department of Geology and Geophysics, and prior to 1952 it was the Department of Geology. The Department of Meteorology has its roots in 1928, although it wasnt officially named until 1941. Before 1941, the Department of Meteorology was a program in the Department of Aeronautical Engineering that began as a three year grant from the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. Graduate instruction began in the fall of 1928, and undergraduate instruction was offered from 1944 to 1957. In 1957 the department moved from the School of Engineering to the School of Science. In 1981 the name of the department became the Department of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography.
