Waters, Joe W. 1944-
Joe Waters Microwave Atmospheric Science collection, 1966-1978 (bulk 1970-1978).
This collection is composed of documents collected by Waters as he conducted research and experiments in the microwave atmospheric science field. It contains proposals, contract reports, quarterly progress reports, correspondence, handwritten notes, and drawings pertaining to microwave atmospheric science research and experiments involving JPL, MIT, Goddard Space Flight Center, Ames Research Center, other NASA Centers and government agencies.
Joe W. Waters earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in 1967 and his Ph.D. in 1971, each from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1967, prior to his work at JPL, Waters was actively involved in the field of microwave meteorology as shown by the seminars and meetings he attended. From 1972-1973, he also worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Division of Sponsored Research, as a participant in the project called the Bering Sea Experiment (BESEX). This was a joint effort between the United States and the Soviet Union to measure microwave radiation using each country's aircraft. As part of that project, JPL was involved in the installation of the Nimbus-E Microwave Spectrometer (NEMS). Waters worked with JPL personnel during preparation of this experiment, and in January 1974, he left MIT and joined JPL to become part of Space Instruments, Section 823, and began working on the design and building of the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS).
