The collection includes calendars, journals, correspondence, administrative files from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), scientific research files, photographs, and biographical materials concerning Brown. There are also files concerning the Millimeter Array (MMA), the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), the Orbiting Very Long Baseline Interferometry (OVLBI), the High Resolution Imaging Spectroscopy (HISAT), the Orbiting Submillimeter Telescope (OST), and the Committee on Space Astronomy and Astrophysics (CSAA).
Robert Lamme Brown obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1965 and a Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego in 1969, where he worked under Robert J. Gould. In 1969, Brown was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). He later served as director of the NRAOs Green Bank (1977-1980) and Tucson (1984-1985) facilities, was NRAO Associate Director (1985-1999), Director of the MMA Project (1991-1999), and NRAO Deputy Director (2000-2003). In 2003, Brown became the Director of the Arecibo Observatory. He retired in 2008.
