This collection consists of web exhibits created by the American Institute of Physics, as they existed in July 2021. The Center for History and Philosophy of Physics was established as a division of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) in 1965 by the joining of the AIP's Project on the History of Recent Physics in the United States, which was started in 1961, and its Niels Bohr Library for History of Physics, which had opened in 1962. Its purpose is to aid in the efforts of the scholarly community to document, investigate, and understand the nature and origin of developments in 20th century physics and their impact on society. In 1972 the name was changed to the Center for History of Physics.
