Collection contains the papers of Dr. Varanasi Rama Murthy, Emeritus Professor of Geology at the University of Minnesota. Materials include professional and personal correspondence, records related to Murthy's research and activities with the National Science Foundation and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), administrative materials related to teaching, and publications.
Dr. Varanasi Rama Murthy was a Professor of Geology at the University of Minnesota from 1969 until his retirement in 2006. He earned his Bachelor of Science in geology at Andhra University in Waltair India, and both his Master's degree and Ph.D in Geology at Yale University. Murthy went on to become a Research Fellow in Geochemistry at the California Institute of Technology (1957-1959), and an Assistant Research Geochemist (1959-1962) and Assistant Professor (1962-1965) at the University of California, San Diego. In 1965, Murthy joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as an Associate Professor of Geology, and was later named Professor in 1969. During his time at the University of Minnesota, Murthy served as the head of the Department of Geology and Geophysics (1971-1983), and as the Associate Dean and Acting Dean of Academic Affairs for the Institute of Technology (1983-1985). From 1985-1990, Murthy served as the Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
