Henry Askew Barton 1898-1983
Henry Askew Barton image collection, 1932-1975.
This phographic collection contains images from 1932 through 1975, which includes the period in which Barton served as the first Director of the American Institute of Physics (1931-957) and later as the Associate Director (1957-1963). The majority of images are of Barton, including professional portraits and personal photographs of Barton with his family. The collection also contains images of the American Institute of Physics office in New York City and images from the dedication ceremony for the building, which show Prince Philip and Frederick Seitz in attendance.

Professional experience includes: fellow, National Research Council, Harvard University (1925-1927); fellow, Bartol Research Foundation (1927-1929); assistant professor of physics, Cornell University (1929-1931); founding director, American Institute of Physics (1931-1957); consultant, National Roster of Scientific and Specialized Personnel, War Manpower Commission (1942-1945); associate director, American Institute of Physics (1957-1963); president, Scientific Manpower Commission (1958). Awarded Karl Taylor Compton Medal, American Institute of Physics (1964).
