Schalk, Marshall
Marshall Schalk papers, 1927-1999.
The collection contains the professional and personal papers of Marshall Schalk. These include department and course files, several scientific publications, professional correspondence and photographs, field trip material and research notes, and some college memorabilia in the form of musical programs and news clippings, as well as a Celebration of Life slideshow.
Marshall Schalk attended Harvard University, where he received his B.A. in 1929, his M.A. in 1931, and his Ph.D. in 1936 from that institution. He came to Smith College as an assistant Professor in Geology in 1934, and after taking a few years away returned to Smith in 1941 as an Assistant Professor. Schalks research centered on beach evolution, but he taught on a wide variety of subjects, including sedimentology, oceanography, meteorology, and physical geology. He was a member of Sigma Xi and the American Geophysical Union, and a fellow of the Geological Society of America. Schalk retired in 1972.
