John Warren Davis papers, 1905-1980.
This collection includes personal and family papers, correspondence, speeches, writings by Davis and others, documents concerning organizations with which Davis was affiliated, subject files, photographs, memorabilia, artifacts, and audiotapes relating to Davis's activities on behalf of Afro-American education, civil rights, and international cooperation. Includes materials relating to Davis's activities as director of the US Technical Cooperation Administration in Liberia, research concerning Afro-American education and employment conducted by Davis through the Phelps-Stokes Fund and the National Technical Association, and materials relating to his involvement with African-American Institute, Freemasons, Morehouse College, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and its Legal Defense and Educational Fund, National Science Foundation, Unesco, and West Virginia State College.
John Warren Davis was a scientist, educator, college adminstrator, and civil rights leader. He obtained a BA from Morehouse College in 1911 and completed graduate studies in chemistry and physics at the University of Chicago in 1913. After, Davis served as the registrar at Morehouse College from 1914 to 1917, and as a professor of chemistry and physics. In 1919, he became President of West Virginia Collegiate Institute, a position he held until 1953. From 1950 to 1956, Davis was also a member of the first National Science Board of the National Science Foundation.
