Gamow, George, 1904-1968
George Gamow and Richard Blade manuscript papers, 1967-2004.
The collection contains the unfinished manuscript of George Gamows and Richard Blades Basic Theories of Modern Physics, which was meant to be an upper division level physics text. The manuscript emphasizes the history and development of the various theories of modern physics of the 20th century rather than teach how to apply them. Richard Blade was approached by Professor Gamow to co-author the book in return for editing, additions, and revisions, as well as his professional knowledge of the S-matrix theory of quantum electrodynamics. The materials in the collection are the manuscript itself and proposed illustrations.
George Gamow was a Ukrainian born physicist and cosmologist. Education: Novorossiya University, Odessa; University of Leningrad. Affiliations: Theoretical Physics Institute, University of Copenhagen (1928-1931); Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge. Gamov defected to the United States in 1933, and began work at George Washington University in 1934. Richard Blade was an American physics professor. Education: University of Colorado (1964). Became chair of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs physics department in 1968.
