In 1973, AAAS established a Committee on Opportunities in Science and and Office of Opportunities in Science (OOS) to develop projects that would increase the participation, enhance the status, and accelerate the advancement of women and minorities in scientific professions. In 1975, the scope of OOS was expanded to include projects for disabled scientists as well. In 1990, AAAS organized the programmatic activities of OOS under a broader Directorate for Education and Human Resources.
