Robert Ambrose Thornton papers, 1922-1982.
The Thornton papers include correspondence, speeches, notes, writings, reports, studies, book reviews, newspaper clippings, and audio and video cassettes. Additionally, there is information from the community organizations in which Thornton participated. The correspondence gives insight into Dr. Thorntons teaching positions at different institutions beginning in 1944. The collection also includes three letters from Albert Einstein mounted on plaques. Photocopies of these letters are located in the correspondence folders in this collection. Writings include Dr. Thorntons Masters thesis and Ph. D. dissertation, which are both bound, and articles. Also included are writings on his teaching philosophies. The six videotapes include three from the "Scholar in Residence" series in which Thornton participated. The program was designed as an enrichment activity for high school teachers and sought to bring authorities from difference disciplines together to share ideas. One videotape is of the dedicatory services for a building at the University of California-San Francisco named after Dr. Thornton. One tapes are interviews in which Thornton discusses physics, physics education, Einsteins theories, and research on the unified field theory. The final tape in the collection discusses the influence of Thorntons teachers on him, particularly Carter G. Woodson and Albert Einstein, and his views on the teaching of science. Part of this second tape has been transcribed. Main correspondents include: Albert W. Dent, Buell Gallagher, Charles S. Johnson, Samuel C. Kincheloe, David Berkowitz, Jamie Benitez, Albert Einstein, Elton Fax, and R. O'Hara Lanier.
