In this interview, David Zierler, Oral Historian for AIP, interviews Gino Segr,̈ emeritus professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania. Segr ̈recounts his childhood in Italy and his familys abrupt exit for the United State before the outbreak of World War II. He discusses his life in New York, and his familys decision move back and forth from Italy. Segr ̈discusses his undergraduate experience at Harvard University and his graduate research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He discusses his work on field theory at University of California, Berkeley, and his decision to join the faculty at University of Pennsylvania where he set about helping to build up the elementary particle physics program. Toward the end of the interview, Segr ̈discusses his developing interests as a science writer, the present course of theoretical particle physics and the importance for physicists to reinvent themselves over the course of their careers.
Italian-American theoretical physicist, Gino Segr.̈ A.B., Harvard University (1959); Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1963). He is a Professor of Physics, Emeritus, at the University of Pennsylvania and well-known for his published books, many of which focus on the history of atomic physics.
