Hanau, Richard, 1917-
Richard Hanau manuscripts of MILITARY HANDBOOK OF OPTICAL DESIGN and other writings, 1950-1977.
Manuscript drafts; corrections; revisions; and correspondence. The collection contains the proposed draft of the Military Handbook of Design of Optical Elements (1959), and the first and second drafts with revisions of sections of Military Handbook 141, Optical Design. The three volume handbook was prepared by Frankford Arsenal (Philadelphia, PA). Hanau contributed material to several chapters and did editorial work on the entire book. Topics include: fundamental laws of geometrical optics, physical optics, visual optics, optical equations, first order optics, and data, aberration analysis and third order theory, theory and application of system design, and applications of physical optics (vol. 2); objective systems, eyepieces, mirror and prism systems, erecting systems, optical material, atmospheric optics, optics for missile tracking, infrared optical design, microscope optics, phase microscopy, coating of optical surfaces, and optical testing methods (vol. 3). The correspondence concerns the corrections and revisions to the drafts of the handbook. Correspondents include David C. Grant, Robert E. Hopkins, John C. Kelly, and Robert H. Lawrence. Also included in the collection are progressive editions and working manuscripts (1950-1977) of a paper detailing Hanau's theory of errors; and a 28-page pamphlet on Experiment VI, The Dispersing Prism (1976), describing the basic ideas and terminology of refracting prism spectrographs.
