The collection documents the life of Eleanor Stabler Brooks, including her marriage to professor and meteorological researcher Charles Franklin Brooks. In particular, the collection includes materials on Charles Brooks' teaching at Yale, service with the United States Army Signal Corps, employment at the Weather Bureau and the United States Department of Agriculture. Also included is his appointment as professor at Clark University (1921-1931), at Harvard University (1931-1958), There are references to the weather and meteorological research, as well as his professional activities and trips. The collection includes photographs, postcards, and scrapbooks.
Eleanor Stabler (1892-1986): B.S., biology (Radcliffe, 1914). Winner of the Jonathan Fay Prize. Married Charles Franklin Brooks in 1914.
Charles Franklin Brooks, meteorologist (1891-1958): Ph.D. (Harvard, 1914). Professional experience: United States Department of Agriculture, Atlas of American Agriculture (1914-1915); instructor in geography at Yale University (1915-1918; service during World War I with the United States Army Signal Corps; edited the Weather Bureau's Monthly Weather Review (1918-1921); associate professor of meteorology, Clark University (1921) and full professor (1926-1931); professor of meteorology at Harvard University and director of the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory (1931-1958). Brooks was largely responsible for founding the American Meteorological Society in 1919, remaining its secretary until 1954 and editing its bulletin until 1938.
