The collection chiefly documents Martins role as dean of the Harvard Division of Applied Sciences from 1977 to 1998, and includes correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, and reports. Also chronicled are Martins other administrative roles, including as Chairman of the Physics Department and his service on various Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences committees. Records in the accession also include research files documenting Martins work in the field of theoretical physics, personal and professional correspondence, and teaching materials for Martins Harvard physics courses. Other records are professional activity files which document Martins relationship with other organizations including Associated Universities, Inc. and the New England Consortium for Undergraduate Science Education, reviews and reports on other universities and colleges, and writings and lectures by Martin on theoretical physics.
Paul Cecil Martin (1931-2016) was the John Hasbrouck Van Vleck Professor of Pure and Applied Physics at Harvard University from 1982 to 2008 (emeritus 2008) and dean of the Harvard Division of Applied Sciences from 1977 to 1998. Martins research centered on theoretical physics, making significant contributions to the fields of nuclear, atomic, and condensed matter physics. He also helped guide the development of engineering and applied sciences at Harvard, was a leader in University wide initiatives, and was involved in science and technology policy at a national level. Martin received his AB (1952) and PhD (1954) from Harvard, before joining the faculty as assistant professor of physics in 1957. In 1964, he was appointed professor of physics.
