Dziewonskis research and teaching at Harvard University and the University of Texas, as well as his involvement with professional organizations including the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology Consortium and the International Seismological Centre. The accession contains correspondence, including correspondence from Dziewonskis tenure as chair of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences; letters of recommendation; research files; and writings and manuscripts on geophysics and seismology. Other records document Dziewonskis conference participation, including the talks he gave; grant proposals; and teaching materials such as examinations, syllabi, and lecture notes. The accession also contains awards and honors received by Dziewonski for his scientific achievements including the Crafoord Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1998); and photographs and photo albums, including an image of the Harvard Geology Club in 1933.
Adam Marian Dziewonski (1936-2016), was a geophysicist who spent most of his career mapping the deep interior of the Earth, developing seismic tomography, a technique for imaging the subsurface of the Earth with seismic waves produced by earthquakes or explosions. After receiving his doctorate in Cracow, Poland in 1965, Dziewonski traveled to the United States for post-doctoral research, where he continued his career as a seismologist. He taught at the University of Texas until 1972, when he became Associate Professor at Harvard University. In 1976, Dziewonski became Professor of Geology at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and from 1994 the Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard. Dziewonski served as chair of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard from 1982 to 1986.
