The collection comprises diaries, astronomical observation notebooks, scrapbooks, lecture notes, personal and professional correspondence, and material about the Brown University Department of Astronomy and Ladd Observatory, as well as photographs and various tributes to Professor Upton, and a memoir written by his daughters.
American astronomer and meteorologist. Master's degree, University of Cincinnati (1877). Professional experience includes: assistant, Harvard Observatory (1877-); assistant engineer, Army Engineer Corps' Lake Survey (1879-); computer, Naval Observatory in Washington (1880); computer and assistant professor, United States Signal Office (1881-1883); professor of astronomy, first director of Ladd Observatory, dean of the university, Brown University (1883-).
