Professional experience includes: research fellow in radio astronomy, Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, D. C. (1954-1956); from assistant astronomer to chairman, chief scientist, Hayden Planetarium and Department of Astronomy of the American Museum of Natural History (1956-1985); public affairs officer, American Astronomical Society (1973-1979).
