Volkov, D. V. (Dmitrii Vasilevich)
Oral history interview with Dmitrij Vasilyevich Volkov 1995 March 4.
Volkov recollects his early life and education in Leningrad (1925-1943); his participation in World War II fighting in Karelia and the Far East (in Manchuria). Describes passing examinations without attending lectures for secondary school and entering the Physical Department of Leningrad State University; his higher education at the Department of Nuclear Physics, Kharkiv State University; after graduation from the University becoming a postgraduate student of academician O. I. Akhieser; his successful defense of thesis devoted to problems of the quantum electrodynamics of scalar particles; more than 40 years of work at the Kharkiv (formerly Kharkov) Institute of Physics and Technology from junior researcher to academician; reasons which led Volkov to discovery of supersymmetry and supergravity (symmetry of new type which unifies the space-time and spin degrees of freedom - this unification demanded the creation of a new branch of mathematics, supermathematics, which was developed by the Soviet mathematicans F. Berezin and V. Kac); Volkov discusses the development of the group methods of E. Cartan and their application to the description of nonlinear interactions between bosonic goldstone particles in high energy physics (pions, kaons) and solid state physics (magnons) (the generalization of these methods for fermionic goldstone fields led him to the ideas of the Pioncar ̌supergroup and superspace as a space which contains additional grassmannian coordinates).
Physicist (theory, elementary particles). At Kharkiv Insitute of Physics and Technology (now National Scientific Center Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology), 1951-; head of the Laboratory. He died in 1996.
