The collection consists of Robert R. Gilruth's papers, notes, records, articles, photographs, awards, degrees, certificates, and artifacts. A majority of the collection contains professional papers from Gilruth's work in the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), including speeches and presentations, reports, photographs, oral history transcripts, notes, and newpapersclippings, as well as certificates, awards, and artifacts. Personal materials include a typescript diary, Gilruth's 1936 M.S. Thesis, and an unpublished memoir.
American aeronautical and aerospace engineer. M.S. engineering, University of Minnesota (1936). Professional experience includes: flight research engineer, assistant chief, NACA Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory (1937-1945); chief, NACA Pilotless Aircraft Research Division (1945-1951); assistant director, NACA Langley Research Center (1952-1958); director of Project Mercury, NASA Space Task Group, (1958-1961); director, NASA Manned Spacecraft Center (1961-1972); director of key personnel development, NASA Headquarters (1972-1973).
