Robert Sproull received an AB in 1940 and a PhD in 1943 in physics from Cornell University. He served at Cornell as a physics professor and became the Director of the Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics and the Materials Science Center. Sproull was also the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Cornell. He left Cornell to take the position of director of ARPA and later Vice President and Provost at the University of Rochester.
