Italian engineer and mathematician, Enrico Volterra, son of mathematician, Vito Volterra, conducted research for both the British Admiralty and the U.S. Office of Naval Research during World War II. He taught at Rome University, Cambridge University, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1957, where he was Professor of Aerospace Engineering. Volterra specialized in the theory of vibrations, strength of materials, the mathematical theory of elasticity, and experimental stress analysis, which can be connected to the field of rheology.
