Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Geological Data Center
Scripps Institution of Oceanography Geological Data Center records, 1948-1999.
The records of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Geological Data Center (GDC) and includes schedules of ships, summaries of decommissioned ships and information on active ships. The cruise data microfilm consists of 1,233 reels of original master negatives for microfilm of SIO cruise data from 1950-1999. The microfilm includes images of original Scripps shipboard seismic and bathymetric rolls, plus additional data from Scripps cruises and a few non-Scripps cruises for which data processing was done at Scripps. The microfilm was shot by GDC technician Dale Newhouse from 1960 to 1990 using a unique flow camera system. The original data filmed in this microfilm is in the custody of GDC, but is in poor condition. The microfilm was made as a security copy.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography Geological Data Center, which might more accurately be named the Underway Marine Geophysical Data Center, was established in 1970 to process, archive and distribute underway geophysical data collected on Scripps expeditions. The data handled by the data center include navigation, single and multibeam bathymetry, magnetics, gravity and seismic reflection profiler. The coverage includes all Scripps cruises that collected underway data from the early 1950s to the present, mostly in the Pacific and to a lesser extent in the Indian and Atlantic oceans.
