The Charles E. Hewitt correspondence collection contains correspondence between Charles E. Hewitt, Dean of Engineering, and the Metcalf and Eddy Consulting Engineers firm concerning the sewerage system they designed for the University of New Hampshire for the period of January 1914 - September 1916. The system developed a problem with accumulating sludge and both parties were interested in working out an effective solution.

Professional experience includes: engineer and designer, Hyer Sheehan Electric Motor Company (1895-1897); partner, Sheehan and Hewitt (1897-1899); partner, Hewitt and Warden (1899); president, C. E. Hewitt Engineering Company (1899-1908); professor of electrical engineering, dean of the school of engineering, University of New Hampshire (1908-1920); director, University of New Hampshire Training Detachment, War Department (1918-1919); education consultant, General Staff of the War Department (1920-1921); advisory board, assistant to the director, American Council on Education (1921-1925). He was the first student to enroll in the electrical engineering course at New Hampshire College, graduating in 1893 and going on to obtain a masters at Cornell.
