University of New Hampshire. College of Engineering and Physical Sciences
University of New Hampshire physics qualifying exams, 1966-1994.
Prior to 2007, the Ph.D. students in the Physics Department were required to pass the written Ph.D. qualifying exams in order to reach candidacy status. The exams were composed by the physics faculty and given at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. The exams were replaced by a written and oral comprehensive exam, and students have to pass both to reach candidacy. This collection contains examples of old exams that were kept on Reserve in the physics branch library for the students to use as study guides.
The New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was established in 1866. In 1911, a major reorganization of the entire institution took place. Three divisions were established: the Agricultural Division, the Engineering Division and the Arts and Sciences Division. When the College became the University in 1923, the Engineering Division became the College of Technology. In 1976, to make the name more descriptive of what the college actually does, the college was renamed the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS).
