Clamshell Alliance
Clamshell Alliance records, 1976-1988.
Contains the Clamshell Alliance's correspondence and office records, committee minutes, press releases, financial information, publications, subject files, and materials from individual members. The collection also includes information and publications from other Clamshell-affiliated groups, various antinuclear and left-wing organizations, and materials related to the potential for decommissioning the Seabrook nuclear reactor.
The Clamshell Alliance was formed in 1976 in order to protest the construction of a nuclear reactor in Seabrook, New Hampshire. The Alliance consisted of a loosely-knit coalition of antinuclear groups, mostly in New England, organized around a central office, which disseminated information between groups and coordinated protest activities. From 1976 through the late 1980s, the Clamshell Alliance organized a number of direct, non-violent actions to voice their concern over Seabrook. They also organized and participated in other antinuclear activities in New Hampshire and throughout the U.S.
