John Gibson Winans papers, 1930-1982.
This collection contains the personal and professional papers of J. Gibson Winans, mainly from his affiliation with the University of Wisconsin and Sylvania Electric Products Inc. Included in the collection are correspondence pertaining to professional activities such as conferences and research, as well as early indications of Winans' eventual involvement in politics (including a letter from Senator Joseph McCarthy). Research reports, notes on physics and other topics including quantum theory, teaching materials, documents related to Winans' publication history, and other miscellaneous items make up of the rest of the collection.

Professional experience includes: national research council fellow, Princeton University (1927-1928); International Education Board fellow, University of Gottingen (1928-1930); associate professor of physics, University of Wisconsin (1930-1962); research physicist, Sylvania Electric Products Co. (1945-); aeronautical research engineer, Langley Aeronautical Laboratory (1957); professor of physics and astronomy, professor emeritus, University of Buffalo (1962-1990).
