Collection of photographic slides, mainly informal portraits of physicists and astronomers, taken by American astronomer John Irwin betewen 1950 and 1988 as he worked and traveled to conferences, meetings, and observatories around the world. These meetings include General Assemblies of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), other IAU meetings, and numerous American Astronomical Society (AAS) Meetings. Subjects include astronomers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals, and Nobel Laureates. Some observatory locations include South Africa, Chile, and the United States.
American astronomer. Ph.D. astronomy, University of California, Berkeley (1946). Professional experience includes: University of Pennsylvania (1946-1948); Indiana University (1948-1964); the Carnegie Institution of Washington (1964-1967); Steward Observatory (1967-1968); the University of California, Los Angeles (1968-1970); Kean University (1971-1977).
